The Film 'Together' Is Now Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Relationship.

Consider this a test for long-term couples who are fans of horror films: Sit down with your significant other and stream Together. This 2025 indie hit just made its streaming debut on Hulu. At first glance, it may seem like standard biological terror, but within Together resides a deep examination about how we choose to love one another.

A Directorial Debut Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together is the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for a decade. Married in reality in 2017, the two stars infuse a unique chemistry to their roles, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The narrative commences when Millie and Tim move from the big city to the rural area for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, of course, but that’s primarily where the conventions end. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a body horror flick.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While trekking near their country house, a storm hits, and the two fall into an underground cave. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity starts to affect the couple. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.

The whole movie is a methodically building of scares, blending bits of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). Michael Shanks skillfully blends these components expertly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.

Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and isolated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and distant from his network of friends. He dreads the notion of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in his partner. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for mobility.

The director's cleverest decision in this movie never makes one partner or the other the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie grapple with the sort of issues that are inherent in any relationship a decade in. Fundamentally, they have affection for one another. They still laugh together, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these concerns of codependency and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the symbolism does not come across as overly obvious or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama serve the other in harmony.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. It has been said that unattached audience members have seen the movie as a powerful case for avoiding commitment. On the other hand, certain partners experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them reconcile.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own response could potentially serve as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and yell at the screen, or simply glance toward your other half and say, “I’d do that for you”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an exploration you can undertake right now.

Together is streaming on Hulu's platform now.
