Super Typhoon Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Large-Scale Evacuations Reported

The Philippines has been hit hard by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, resulting in at least two people dead and displaced over a million residents.

Officials reported that the powerful weather system triggered extensive sudden floods, coastal inundation, mudslides, and fierce high-velocity gusts, leading to the relocation of millions of residents nationwide.

Widespread Destruction and Emergency Operations

In Pandan, Catanduanes, one of the worst-hit regions, disaster response teams documented floodwaters reaching the tops of houses and homes being swept away by strong flows.

Our team rescued fourteen people who were trapped atop a house surrounded by water in a low-lying neighbourhood,” an emergency official stated. “A father also called in panic, reporting the roof of his house was about to be ripped off due to the storm. We rescued him and four relatives.”

By Monday, officials confirmed two fatalities: a drowning victim in Catanduanes and another who died when her house collapsed in eastern Samar.

Typhoon Strength and Projected Path

The intense storm was downgraded to a typhoon early Monday while moving over the Philippines’ largest island, home to the national capital.

Per meteorological authorities, its maximum winds decreased from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, though wind bursts were still reaching more than 275 km/h.

The cyclone is expected to lose strength while heading north toward Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The country’s emergency management agency stated it was still working to evaluate destruction to infrastructure and homes.

Approximately thousands of shelters were activated to accommodate tens of thousands of households.

Recent Context and Climate Impact

The typhoon hit shortly following another severe storm, that claimed hundreds of lives with dozens unaccounted for prior to advancing toward Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Searches for the missing persons had to be suspended recently due to safety concerns for rescue workers.

The climate crisis is causing tropical storms more intense and frequent. This typhoon marks the 21st typhoon to hit the Philippines this year.

Researchers report that the frequency of super-typhoons hitting the Philippines has increased doubled over the last two decades.

Global assessments suggest that intense storms result in approximately millions in dollars in losses to the country annually.

The Philippine president declared an emergency declaration on Thursday due to the extensive devastation from Kalmaegi and anticipated impacts from the new storm.
