The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States on five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been at the heart of efforts to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the regulations are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.
This row threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash between Washington and Europe.
